Bicycling Inclusion and Equity: Histories of New England and Beyond

Bicycling Inclusion and Equity provides a sweep of cycling’s social history, from the 1870s to the present day, from Boston through New England and across the nation. The essays are connected by these themes: who could ride and race with whom and with what barriers and equities, related to race, class, gender, immigration, and disability. Each chapter captures a different era or type of exclusion and inclusion, including one on Major Taylor’s last Six-day race in 1908. While much has changed since cycling began with White gentlemen in 1878, these narratives show the limits of progress. They suggest that much work remains to make the sport of cycling what it can and should be. Read more
